A beginner’s guide to IVF

For some, the journey to parenthood through IVF can feel overwhelming. It can be hard to wrap your head around how it all works and what you can expect. To make the IVF process as straightforward and stress-free as possible, the fertility specialists at Repromed have put together a helpful beginner’s guide with everything you need to know about IVF.

What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) involves fertilising eggs with sperm in a laboratory to create embryos. Once the embryos have fully developed on Day 5, a high-quality embryo is selected to be placed into the uterus in the hope of achieving a successful pregnancy. Any excess embryos that meet the criteria for being frozen can be stored for future embryo transfer cycles.

As one of the most effective fertility treatments available, IVF can help people who are experiencing a range of fertility challenges, including:

  • Ovulation issues: Difficulty releasing eggs regularly.
  • Blocked fallopian tubes: Preventing eggs and sperm from meeting naturally.
  • Sperm-factor sub-fertility: Issues such as low sperm count or quality.
  • Low AMH and age-related sub-fertility
  • Unexplained sub-fertility: When no specific cause for infertility is identified.
  • Family building for LGBTTQIA+ individuals or single parents: Helping diverse families grow.

At Repromed, we understand that every individual and couple brings their own values, needs, and cultural perspectives to the process. That’s why we offer a highly personalised approach to make sure your IVF journey feels as comfortable and supportive as possible.

When should you consider IVF?

If you’ve been trying to start your whānau for over a year without success, it may be time to seek professional advice. For those aged 35 or older, it’s recommended to reach out after six months of trying.

You can self-refer or ask your GP for a referral to a fertility clinic.

The IVF process

IVF might sound complex, but when it’s broken down into smaller steps, the process is a lot easier to understand.

Here’s what you can expect:

1. Consultation & testing

Your journey begins with understanding your fertility health. During your first consultation, we’ll review your medical history, perform any necessary tests, and create a personalised plan that suits your needs.

2. Ovarian stimulation & egg collection

Once you’re ready to get started, specific medications are used to stimulate your ovaries, encouraging the development of multiple eggs. These eggs are then retrieved in a minor procedure under light sedation – this step is quick and straightforward and will be performed by a specialist fertility doctor.

3. Sperm preparation & insemination

A semen sample is then collected and prepared by the Lab team to select the highest quality sperm to be either added to the collected eggs in standard IVF, or individually injected into the eggs in a procedure called ICSI – depending on the number of sperm available.

4. Embryo development & transfer

Fertilised eggs, now called embryos, are carefully monitored in the laboratory for about 5–6 days. Our lab team then selects the highest-quality embryo and the transfer process begins—this procedure is completed by your fertility doctor and is very simple, much like a smear test.

5. Pregnancy test

About two weeks after the egg collection, a pregnancy test is taken via a simple blood test to see if the process has been successful.

How long does IVF take?

A single IVF cycle typically takes about 4–6 weeks. Because our clinic typically has low wait times, we can usually fit you in for a first consultation without delay.

It’s important to note that the number of cycles needed will vary for each individual- factors such as age, overall health, and the nature of your fertility challenges all play a role. While some people achieve success on their first attempt, others may need multiple cycles.
