When seeking specialist fertility care, you are choosing to trust a doctor with your hopes for the future. It’s important that you have full confidence in your specialist’s expertise, but demystifying the letters following a doctor’s name can prove to be a challenge! In New Zealand, the highest possible qualification in fertility is to become a Certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) specialist. Around a dozen doctors in the country have achieved this certification, and here at Repromed we have four of them on our team. These doctors are true fertility experts, offering an unparalleled level of care to each of our clients.
Dr. Devashana Gupta is a fertility doctor and CREI specialist who has been on staff since 2014 when she commenced her training with Repromed. She then went to Melbourne for 2 years to further her training at Monash IVF/Health. Devashana returned to Repromed at the beginning of last year. Here she shares insight into the path to achieving CREI certification, and how she sees its value in providing client care:
“As a starting point, the training is rigorous! To be a successful candidate for CREI training, applicants must first complete a full six-year Obstetrics and Gynaecology programme, show an interest in research, have some fertility training and often, a post-graduate qualification such as a Master’s degree in Reproductive Medicine. Once accepted, doctors enter at least three years of intensive study, focusing on all aspects of reproductive health – spanning puberty to menopause. Over the training period, trainees study endocrinology and infertility papers, conduct research as well as sit for written and oral examinations. CREI certification is only granted upon completion of the requirements and upon application.
CREI training gave me specialised tools to manage complex reproductive health issues, enabling me to provide patients with excellent, research-based care. Training time is also dedicated around quality management systems that resources us with the skills necessary to manage a RTAC accredited fertility clinic. Knowing that your doctor has achieved CREI certification means you are receiving the highest possible level of care and that they have done the hard work of study, research, and training, and are well qualified to help you achieve your dreams of having a family.”
