Guy Gudex reflects on 2017

The end of each year always invites reflection, and as I look back at the past 12 months at Repromed, I couldn’t be prouder of our team. 2017 marked Repromed’s 10th birthday, and as our first-ever IVF baby cut the cake at our celebration, I was reminded of the honour that it is to support New Zealand families on their fertility journey. Our team is extremely focused on setting the highest standards in fertility care and this year saw significant developments in treatment options.

We are passionate that our clinic is a safe and welcoming place for everyone, so were delighted when we received further Rainbow Tick certification in May. This year we achieved accreditation for the new ISO 2015 standards which is the highest quality management standard available in NZ. We also marked the end of our fourth year of offering publicly funded services, making fertility treatment available to more New Zealanders.

A key focus for us is to be at the cutting edge of new technology that can help our clients to conceive. Repromed was the first clinic in New Zealand to offer EmbryoSelect, (Pre-Implantation Genetic Screening, PGS, with Next Generation Sequencing, NGS) that improves the chances of healthy pregnancy, and in 2017 we launched a local service in Auckland. An international randomised controlled trial released in October 2017 positively concluded that PGS with NGS can reduce the chance of miscarriage and increase the chance of healthy pregnancy in women over 35. It was exciting to see that our first patient to use EmbryoSelect became pregnant, and subsequent results have continued to confirm its benefits.

Our team of fertility experts are constantly learning, and research is an important part of our practice. This year, one of our embryologists received top accolades for her scientific presentation on EmbryoGen, a specialised embryo culture media that Repromed were the first to offer in New Zealand. In September, I attended a scientific meeting in Madrid focused on future developments in IVF, and I left reassured that Repromed is offering the latest, most effective technologies available. It was also exciting to learn more about new treatments in the development in IVF – especially in respect to improved implantation and embryo selection.

In Repromed’s decade of helping clients grow their families, 2017 was our busiest yet. We are looking forward to continuing to offer fertility excellence in the year ahead. We are thankful to our clients for offering us their trust, and wish you all best for the Christmas season ahead.

Nga mihi.
