Thinking about travelling to Auckland for IVF treatment?

Kia ora, and welcome to Repromed.

If you don’t live in Auckland but are exploring IVF treatment, you may be wondering whether travelling for care is the right option for you. For many people across Aotearoa, distance can feel like a barrier,  but it doesn’t have to be.

We support clients from all over New Zealand and are experienced in coordinating fertility treatment for those who need to travel. Much of the IVF process can be completed locally, with only a small number of visits required to our Auckland clinic.

This page outlines what you can expect, what can be done close to home, and when travel is needed, so you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.

Why people choose to travel to Repromed for IVF treatment

Distance shouldn’t limit your fertility options. At Repromed, we work with people from across the country and tailor care to suit individual needs and circumstances.

People choose Repromed because we offer:

We are also proud to be the first healthcare provider in Aotearoa to receive the Rainbow Tick, reflecting our long-standing commitment to inclusivity and respectful care.

Can IVF treatment be shared between home and Auckland?

Yes. Many parts of IVF treatment can be completed locally, reducing the need to travel while still receiving specialist care from our Auckland clinic.

IVF treatment typically takes up to six months and involves consultations, tests, and procedures that can often be shared between your local providers and Repromed. We coordinate this carefully with you, your local laboratories, and radiology clinics.

What parts of IVF can be done locally?

The following parts of your treatment can usually be completed close to home:

Consultations
All consultations can be done via Zoom. You’ll meet your fertility doctor, talk through your options, and receive follow-up information by email.

Consent forms
Consent forms can be completed at home and emailed back to us.

Blood tests
Blood tests can be done at a local laboratory. These usually need to be completed before 9.00 am so results can be received the same day. Depending on your location, same-day results may not always be possible.

Scans
Most ultrasound scans can be completed at a local radiology clinic, with arrangements made between Repromed and the ultrasound provider.

Medication
Some medications can be collected from your local pharmacy with a prescription arranged in advance.

Pregnancy testing
Pregnancy blood tests can be completed at your local laboratory.

Early pregnancy care
If treatment is successful, early pregnancy blood tests and follow-up can be done locally. A seven-week scan can also be completed close to home.

When will I need to travel to Auckland?

You will usually need to visit our Auckland clinic at least four times during your IVF treatment. There is one stage where we recommend staying in Auckland for two to three nights.

Travel to the clinic is required for:

Medication collection
Some IVF injections must be collected from Repromed so our nursing team can explain how to store and use them safely.

Monitoring before egg collection
A scan at Repromed two to three days before egg collection helps determine the timing of your trigger injection.

Egg collection (OPU)
You’ll be at the clinic for around three to four hours. You’ll need a support person and will not be able to drive for 24 hours afterwards. We recommend staying overnight before travelling home.

Embryo transfer
This usually happens three or five days after egg collection. The procedure takes around 30 minutes and does not require anaesthetic, so you can usually travel afterwards.

Travel, accommodation, and medication considerations

Travelling with medication
We provide a chiller bag and ice packs for medication that needs to be kept cool. We recommend carrying this with you when flying, and we can provide a travel letter if needed.

Accommodation
You may wish to stay close to the clinic before and after egg collection to rest and reduce travel stress. There are several accommodation options within walking distance, and our team can provide recommendations.

Costs to consider when travelling for IVF

In addition to standard IVF treatment and medication costs, you’ll need to consider:

  • Travel to Auckland for clinic visits

  • Accommodation if required

  • Costs charged by local providers for scans

  • The cost of an AMH blood test, if required

Blood tests (other than AMH) are usually covered, and we provide the necessary lab forms so GP referral fees are not required.

Treatment costs at Repromed are fixed and cannot be reduced if some parts of care are completed locally. Local provider costs are paid separately and are not included in Repromed estimates.

Public funding and eligibility

Repromed is approved to provide publicly funded fertility services for people in the Northern Region of New Zealand.

If you meet the criteria for public funding, you will be randomly allocated to a fertility clinic in your region.
