Can you build a family on your own?
From understanding your fertility options, including IUI and IVF, to exploring emotional support counselling, Repromed is here to help you take confident and informed steps towards building your whānau as a solo parent.
We believe there’s no one “one-size-fits-all” way to build a whānau. Whether you’re single, part of the rainbow community, or simply feel called to build your whānau in your own time, we warmly welcome your choice to pursue solo parenthood.
Starting solo fertility treatment can be deeply personal and often emotional, but our team is here to support you with empathy, expert guidance, and care.

Why someone might choose to start their family on their own
There are many reasons someone may explore fertility treatment solo. Some have always envisioned becoming a parent, regardless of relationship status (see our client story here), whereas others might be at a stage in life where waiting for the “right time” or partner no longer aligns with their dreams of starting a family.
Whatever your reason, know this: you’re not alone. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
What fertility treatment options are available when going solo?
Donor sperm options
If you don’t have a known sperm donor, we can talk to you about joining our clinic donor waitlist. While donor sperm is a limited resource in and there is a long wait time, our team will support you through the process and help you understand your options.
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)
A common and often gentle first step that involves placing sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)
A more advanced option where eggs are collected and fertilised in the lab before being transferred to the uterus.
Egg freezing
If you’re not quite ready to begin treatment but want to keep your options open (see our client story here), egg freezing can help you to preserve your fertility for the future.
Our team will guide you through each option and help create a plan that suits your needs and circumstances.
Important things to consider
Before beginning solo fertility treatment, it can be helpful to reflect on a few important aspects, including:
Emotional wellbeing
This journey can bring joy and hope but also uncertainty. You might experience a wide range of feelings, and that’s completely normal. Our team is here to support you with counselling services that offer a safe space to talk things through, with or without whānau involvement.
Physical demands
Because fertility treatment involves medical procedures, testing, and potentially medication, it’s important to be aware of what your body will be going through physically. Our clinical team will walk you through each step, answer your questions, and make sure you feel informed every step of the way.
Financial planning
Solo parenthood often comes with unique financial considerations. We provide a detailed cost breakdown for each treatment option so that you know exactly what to expect. Our team can also talk you through payment options and practical ways to budget for both treatment and the journey into parenthood.
Support along the way
Just because you’re going solo, that doesn’t mean you have to navigate this journey alone. Whether you need emotional support, expert guidance, or connection with others who understand, there are some fantastic resources available to help you feel supported. You are welcome to bring a support person to every clinic visit and procedure, and you will need someone to pick you up and stay with you on the day of egg collection.
Counselling services
Confidential counselling and support services are available to everyone at Repromed while you are trying to create and complete your family. Our highly experienced counselling team is here to be with you on your individual fertility journey and be a reflective, listening ear when you need it. Simply speak with our reception or nursing team to arrange an appointment.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it usually take to get started with treatment?
Once you’ve had your initial consultation and completed any necessary tests, we’ll work with you to create a treatment timeline that suits your needs and preferences. For some, this can be quite quick; for others, it might take more time depending on the chosen treatment path or donor availability.
What if I don’t have a known sperm donor?
If you don’t have someone you know who can donate, you can choose to join the waitlist for a clinic donor through Repromed. While clinic donor sperm is limited in Aotearoa, we’ll guide you through the process and keep you informed along the way. All our clinic donors are carefully screened to ensure the highest possible health and safety standards.
What fertility tests should I consider before starting treatment?
We recommend starting with a fertility consultation, where we can assess your reproductive health. This might include hormone testing (such as AMH), ultrasound scans and lifestyle discussions. These help us tailor a plan that’s right for you. To find out more about what happens during your initial consultation see this article.
